US Government Offering Free At-Home COVID-19 Tests Starting Sept. 25 2023

Beginning September 25, every U.S. household can again place an order to receive four more free COVID-19 rapid tests delivered directly to their home.

To order free at-home COVID-19 tests, please visit COVID.gov/tests on or after September 25, 2023. You will be able to reserve four tests for delivery to your home. There is no delivery fee. You cannot order tests before September 25.

Tests will begin shipping October 2. There is no word on how long tests will take to arrive, but it is safe to assume that tests will be first come first served and may take up to a few weeks to arrive depending on demand.

What if I still have unused tests?

If you still have unused tests, you may still be able to safely use them, even if they are expired.

After some testing, the FDA has extended the expiration dates on several common at-home COVID-19 tests. This means that your tests may still work even if the date printed on the box has already gone by,

To see if your unused COVID-19 tests are still valid, look at the box and check the manufacturer name. Find your test on this table provided by the FDA. If you see your test in the list and it shows an “Extended Expiration Date” link, your test’s expiration date has been updated. Click “Extended Expiration Date”, then look for the expiration date that shows on your box. If you find it, the updated expiration date will be listed next to it.
